This story was spotted by our eagle-eyed, globe-trotting Aussie Jo Boundy, currently on secondment in our San Francisco office. In the US yesterday, former Virginia Governor and possible 2008 Presidential candidate Mark Warner campaigned on a new frontier: Second Life - the virtual world where people can play, network, trade money, start businesses, develop property and some people make a lot of money. You can basically do anything you want in Second Life that you can do in the real world without the normal restrictions we have such as geographical location, infrastructures, physical disabilities, social fears etc. Oh, and you can also fly.
During his appearance at 3:30pm EST (8:30pm BST), Warner was interviewed by Wagner James Au, and then launched a dedicated Second Life outreach group (and fundraising committee) Forward Together. Read more here.
Warner himself seemed pretty tuned in to the potential of communicating via gaming, saying, "In Second Life, distances and time differences vanish and social technologies can be great tools for political change. Virtual worlds like Second Life might be the next tool for engaging people in the real world democratic process.”
Judging from the pic above Mr. Warner felt that he still needed a couple of bodyguards in the background. With politicians now entering Second Life is anyone truly safe?
